We received 750 used eyeglasses (spectacles) from the Canadian Lions Club in 2006. With these eye glasses, we had a very successful medical camp at the Sri Visuddharama temple in Pitagala in the Galle District in September 07, 2006.
26 medical staff, led by Dr. Udaya Weerakoon and Dr. Rohini Weerakoon, participated in the event. The medical team included one eye consultant, four visiting physicians, one paediatrician, one VOG, seven medical residents, three opticians, six nurses, and three attendants who voluntarily participated in the function.
About 300 patients had their eyes examined in the camp and their lenses prescribed. The eye frames were distributed to them free of charge. During the medical camp, doctors treated about 1,000 patients all together.
In addition, we distributed medicines and packets of milk to the patients. The remaining frames were distributed on an individual basis.
